Commissioner Clay-Flores' CommentsThe State Legislature is in session and Bexar County wants to make sure our state elected officials are fighting for our constituents. I’m visiting with our representatives in Austin to ensure that our voices are heard. We support increasing public school funding, school safety measures, and gun control. Appraisal review processes also need to be reformed. We cannot have constituents taxed out of their homes and neighborhoods. Voter registration should be easier and the creation of an online voter registration system, as well as supporting more voting locations, are vital for our community. The State should also pass more funding for mental health initiatives, including more beds for individuals who need overnight care - whether short-term or long-term. Though there are many other issues we are supporting, these are just a few of the highlights. And lastly, we need our ESDs (emergency services districts) to have the ability to incur debt in order to use their tax revenues to build more fire stations if needed in order to keep up with the growing population of the unincorporated areas of Precinct 1. It’s my privilege to serve you and fight for your interests so that Precinct 1 can continue to be the best place to live, work, play, and pray.

Harvest Trot 5K Walk/RunHave fun and get healthy! This was one of Commissioner Clay-Flores’ motivations for this past fall’s Harvest Trot 5k Walk/Run event. Maintaining our mental health is very important, and one way to obtain this is by participating in physical exercise. We held our inaugural Harvest Trot 5k Walk/Run in November at the beautiful campus of Northwest Vista College. The top three runners from each category received medals, and our various vendors provided souvenirs, freebies, and merchandise for all our runners and attendees. Thank you to all our runners and walkers who participated, to those who showed up to cheer them on, to the Precinct 1 staff, all the vendors and sponsors, and to IAAP Run Management who made this event possible. We’re also grateful to Northwest Vista College who were such gracious hosts for our first Harvest Trot 5k Walk/Run event. A total of $10,715 was raised and the proceeds went to the Texas Kidney Foundation. We hope our constituents are encouraged to exercise and get fresh air and sunshine. Remember to hydrate and drink lots of water for your kidneys. Kidney disease can be a secondary condition suffered as a result of diabetes, high blood pressure, and other health issues. So please exercise and drink plenty of water for both your physical and mental health!

Turkey GiveawayThanksgiving is a season that brings friends and family together in gratitude, and for many, it includes the reveled turkey dinner. Unfortunately this past 2022, the avian flu caused a great shortage in the supply of turkeys. This and the increase in prices of groceries also affected the choices we made at the grocery store this past Thanksgiving season. For that reason, we are very grateful to HEB for donating turkey vouchers and helping our senior citizens. Commissioner Clay-Flores gave these vouchers to the members of the South San Senior Center who were able to enjoy a delicious turkey Thanksgiving meal this past season! There were no shortage of smiles at the end of the day! We also had the opportunity to give turkeys to the Christian Family Baptist Church for their food pantry.

Bexar County Emergency Services District No. 2 Santa RunsIf you live in the northwest part of Precinct 1, you may be familiar with the Bexar County Emergency Services District No. 2 and its annual community outreach event – the Santa Run! The ESD plans ahead of time the routes and dates of each night’s run. The Santa Run is a tradition that goes back many years to the Geronimo Village days. It takes the ESD a lot of planning, preparation, and manpower to organize and carry out this project, and they also spend one night in the Sandy Oaks part of the Precinct on the far South Side. The Santa Runs begin the week after Thanksgiving and runs through the week before Christmas. Commissioner Clay-Flores had the privilege of joining them for a wonderful evening. It was a joy to see so many children eager to see Santa pass by riding on the fire truck, which was lit up with bright Christmas lights and Christmas music booming from their speakers! Children and adults enjoyed the artificial snow machine, and candy was tossed to them by Santa, ESD staff, and Commissioner Clay-Flores. It is an event that the residents look forward to seeing every year during the holidays, and has now become one of Commissioner Clay-Flores’ favorite holiday traditions to join in annually.

New County JudgeJanuary first of this year ushered in a new era of leadership for Bexar County with the swearing in of our recently elected County Judge, Peter Sakai. Judge Sakai made history as the first Asian American to become Bexar County Judge after the retirement of outgoing Judge Nelson Wolff. Judge Wolff spent the last 50 years in public service, and the last 20 years serving as Bexar County Judge. Commissioner Clay-Flores and Judge Wolff partnered on many initiatives that will impact Precinct 1 for generations to come. Commissioner Clay-Flores is looking forward to the new partnership she is building with Judge Peter Sakai, and the new projects that are in store for Precinct 1.

Senior Centers' Christmas ProgramsCovid had kept many seniors from going out and socializing. Fortunately, towards the end of last year we began to see an increase in attendance at the senior centers throughout the precinct. Commissioner Clay-Flores organized musical Christmas programs for each senior center in Precinct 1, and we had a variety of musical guests donate their time, talents, and holiday cheer. We were fortunate to have Santa visit the centers, and the Spurs Coyote paid a surprise visit to the Somerset Senior Center! A quartet from the Classical Music Institute visited St. Vincent De Paul Center and the Willie Cortez Senior Center and performed a mini-concert. Urban 15 performed for the seniors at the Harlandale Civic Center and engaged them in musical exercise and expression through dance, singing, and instruments. It was also a great treat to have mariachi musicians visit the Elvira Cisneros Senior Center. Claudia Ayala performed and invited two guests from Campanas de America, Juan Ortiz and Marcos Basaldua. The Elvira Cisneros Senior Center is the largest in Precinct 1, and they really enjoyed the mariachis! Thank you to each of the musicians who took time out of their busy schedules to bring much cheer to our seniors during the holidays. Special thanks also goes to the Gonzaba Foundation for donating beautiful gift baskets for raffles. Lastly, we thank all of our seniors who welcome us into their centers and encourage them to continue staying active through the social activities offered at the centers throughout Precinct 1.
