Commissioner Clay-Flores’ Comments

Happy Holidays y Felices Fiestas! Whichever traditions you observe, I hope you and your loved ones have a blessed holiday season. I celebrate Christmas and am looking forward to spending time with family and friends.  As I reflect on the end of my first year in office as your County Commissioner, I am grateful for hard working staff and constituents who have worked together with us to make Precinct 1 a place to be proud of as we serve together.  I also can’t help but to think of many people who are suffering during this festive time, either because of natural disasters, mental health issues, or a myriad of other problems.  I encourage you to give a little of your excess to others.  Whether that’s taking a plate of food to someone in need, giving clothes for some who are cold, or simply sending a card of encouragement, may you help to spread joy during the holidays and throughout the new year.  If you enjoy fireworks, then please consider celebrating at the Precinct 1 New Year’s Eve fireworks event at Mission County Park (details below). Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

UHS

New UHS Bexar County Hospital

The South Side will soon see a new UHS Bexar County hospital, which has been long overdue.  It will be located next to Texas A&M University - San Antonio, at Jaguar Parkway and S. Zarzamora.  University Health System has invested $10.4 million for this new facility, buying 68 acres of land. We have been advocating for more resources for Precinct 1, and it’s wonderful to see that this new UHS hospital will partner with its neighbors like Texas A&M University, to attract even more resources to this part of the County.

Mental Health Collaborative

Mobile Mental Wellness Collaborative

One of the projects of utmost importance is ensuring the availability of mental health resources for all Bexar County residents.  Funding for mental health was one of the requests brought to commissioner’s court by Commissioner Clay-Flores this past fall.  A total of $4.75 million over the course of the next five years was allocated for the Mobile Mental Wellness Collaborative. This is a group of six nonprofits that provide mental health professionals at schools to work with students and their families through individual and group counseling.  These resources will give our youth tools for their future and healing from childhood trauma.  This is one way that we as a community will help to break the school to prison pipeline, by helping young people make better decisions and providing them with resources. This program started in South San ISD, and due to funding from Commissioners Court, has now been able to expand to a few more school districts in Precinct 1 – including my alma mater, Brackenridge High School.  I often wonder about the emotional pain I could have avoided as a young person had I had access to counseling while a student at Brack.  My hope is for all schools in Precinct 1 to have social workers and counselors.

Judge Tavera

New Justice of the Peace

On November 9, a new Justice of the Peace was appointed to Precinct 1, JP 2 position, to fill the unexpired term of the former JP who resigned.  Judge Tavera has worked as an associate Justice of the Peace and also a municipal judge.  He is a graduate of University of Texas School of Law and has over 40 years experience.  Judge Tavera will serve out the Place 2 term through December 2022. We welcome Judge Alfredo M. Tavera to the Precinct 1 Satellite Office!

Early this year our office received several calls from constituents in an area of Bexar County that has been forgotten for many years.  The calls were regarding the lack of access to a very basic need – water.  With the leadership and perseverance of Commissioner Clay-Flores and hard work of her team and Bexar County staff, ARPA funds were requested and approved for this project.  This project will soon be in the design stage after many months of groundwork.  We look forward to seeing this project come to fruition, as many residents will greatly benefit from its completion and will finally have access to a water main line on their street.

New Northwest side park

New Northwest Side Park

Preliminary approvals have begun on the new park that will be built to serve the northwest part of Precinct 1.  This part of the Precinct has grown tremendously, yet there is no park for residents to enjoy fresh air or take walks.  This is of vital importance to our health, and I look forward to spending time in our newest Precinct 1 facility kicking off 5K events and other outdoor activities in the future.  We will be reaching out to the neighboring community for their input as we develop plans for our newest County park.  It will be located off of Talley Road – a great addition to the roadway improvements.

St. PJ's Children's Home

Toy Giveaways

Thank you for the partnership between Jewish Family Services and Union Pacific for supporting St. PJ’s and the community of Precinct 1. Together we were able to acquire toys and other gifts for the children of St. PJ’s Children’s Home.  We were able to tour the facility, meet with staff, and speak with some children. They have been doing great work in providing a safe haven for children who are going through crisis.

We also participated in the VFW Post 4815 toy giveaway.  Thank you to our veterans for serving our country and continuing to serve in big and small ways like making sure that children have gifts to open during this holiday season.

New Year's Eve Fireworks

Community Fireworks

Thanks to our sponsor, the Mayes-Johnson Family, this year Precinct 1 will enjoy a fireworks display!  Admission will be free so bring your chairs and blankets and head down to Mission County Park on Friday December 31, 2021 at 6030 Padre Dr, San Antonio, Tx 78214. The park will be open from 6:00 PM to 2:00 AM. Let’s bring in the New Year together by lighting up the sky in Precinct 1.
