Bexar County Meeting Set to Reveal Information Technology and Cyber Security Initiative Curriculum for Local High Schools This Friday, Bexar County Commissioner Tommy Calvert along with County Judge Nelson Wolff, SA Works, and Webhead will together reveal a 4-year information technology and cyber security curriculum to the superintendents of Bexar County with the goal of incorporating these recommendations into local high schools for the 2016-2017 academic year. This curriculum will give students the opportunity to graduate with one or more information technology and security certifications (Network+, Security+, and/or A+). This effort was spearheaded by Commissioner Tommy Calvert after he learned an estimated 2,500 cyber security jobs are coming to San Antonio, but local companies are currently outsourcing these jobs due to a lack of qualified individuals in the surrounding area. Employers are noticing a shortage of local applicants with the required certifications, background clearance, and experience for these jobs. “San Antonio and Bexar County have the second most cyber security jobs in the United States. However, we’re importing people from out of town to fill these jobs that start at $35,000 and within 5 years pay $100,000 because as a community we are not creating a strong pipeline of certification programs. This is a detriment to our students, employers, and the local economy. We can change this.” This meeting will host Superintendents, academic leaders, and other key stakeholders from around the County to listen to a curriculum layout and marketing plan for teachers, counselors, and students. “Friday will be one of the proudest moments of my career as a County Commissioner. We’re helping to connect San Antonio to the global economy by giving students the tools they need to get these cyber security jobs and to make Bexar County a great place to learn, to live, and to work.”
