A Bexar County Jury sentenced a San Antonio woman to life in prison Tuesday for causing the death of her daughter.
Jessica Briones, 39, was found guilty Monday of Murder. Evidence showed Briones took her four-year-old daughter Olivia to a police substation on Sep. 5, 2017. The child was unconscious with injuries to her body, including a subdural hematoma, a large swollen bump to the back of her head, an obvious deformity to both arms and other bruises and scars on her body zand head from previous trauma. Briones, the sole caretaker of Olivia, said her daughter fell and made other excuses for her daughter’s injuries. Olivia died at a hospital from what the medical examiner determined was the result of complications of closed head injuries.
“This little girl suffered at the hands of her own mother. She should have celebrated so many milestones. I appreciate the hard work of our team and this jury to finally get justice for Olivia,” said Bexar County District Attorney Joe Gonzales.
Assistant District Attorneys Michelle Haden, Brittany Mitchell and Michael Villarreal of the Family Violence Division prosecuted this case in the 187th District Court. The San Antonio Police Department investigated the crime.
