Bexar County deputy indicted for fatal shooting

A Bexar County Grand Jury indicted a Bexar County deputy Monday for manslaughter.

The indictment alleges that on March 9, 2020, Brandin Moran recklessly caused the death of Jesus Garcia by discharging a deadly weapon (firearm) at and in the direction of Garcia and that Moran was at the time of the offense a public servant, namely: a deputy of the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office, acting under the color of his employment.

“As we have been doing since 2019, all officer-involved shootings are presented to a Grand Jury for review. An indictment is not a finding of guilt. It is part of the criminal justice system in which anyone accused of a crime is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt by either a judge or a jury. Our office will continue to evaluate this case as we move forward and prepare it for court. We will seek whatever outcome justice requires,” said District Attorney Joe Gonzales.

The Civil Rights Division is prosecuting this case in the 144th District Court. Manslaughter is a second degree felony punishable by 2 to 20 years in prison and a possible fine of up to $10,000.

Because this case is either pending trial, we can make no further comment on it.

Copies of indictments may be requested from the Bexar County District Clerk. Information on court settings can be found by searching the case online or directly from the court.
