On Friday, a woman charged for her role in the cover-up of the death of an 8-month-old boy was sentenced to prison.

Angie Torres, 48, pled guilty in the 227th District Court to a charge of tampering with evidence with intent to impair, a third degree felony. In this case, Torres was charged with assisting in the staged car theft and kidnapping of the victim, as well as the discarding of a car seat to cover-up the death of King Jay Davila. He was reported missing in January of 2019. In exchange for her plea, Torres admitted she committed the offense with her cousin, Christopher Davila, and her aunt, Beatrice Sampayo. Unrelated charges of aggravated robbery and a misdemeanor assault were also taken into consideration with her plea. Judge Kevin O’Connell sentenced Torres to 8 years in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice Institutional Division and a $1,500 fine.

In June, Davila pled guilty to injury to a child causing the death of King Jay. He was sentenced to 40 years in prison.

“Two defendants have accepted responsibility for their roles in this horrible crime. One is serving significant time for causing this innocent baby’s life, now another is headed to prison for helping him try to keep law enforcement from bringing them to justice. No amount of time will bring King Jay back to our community, but these pleas hold those responsible for his untimely death,” said District Attorney Joe Gonzales.

Sampayo is charged in a separate indictment with tampering with evidence. If convicted, the punishment range is 2 to 10 years in prison. Because this case is still pending, we can make no further comment.

This case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Ryan Groomer and Investigator Sheila Sorola of the Family Violence Division. It was investigated by the San Antonio Police Department.
