Former SAPD officer indicted for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon

This morning, a Bexar County Grand Jury indicted a former San Antonio police officer for a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

The first count of the indictment alleges that on Sep. 27, 2020, John Edward Schiller intentionally, knowingly and recklessly caused bodily injury to Christian Torres by striking Torres with the hand of the defendant, and that Schiller used or exhibited a deadly weapon (firearm) during the commission of the assault. The second count of the indictment alleges Schiller intentionally and knowingly threatened Torres with imminent bodily injury by pointing a firearm at and in the direction of Torres and that Schiller used or exhibited a deadly weapon (firearm) during the commission of the assault.

This case is being prosecuted by the Public Integrity and Cyber Crime Division in the 379th District Court. Aggravated assault with a deadly weapon is a second degree felony punishable by 2 to 20 years in prison and a possible fine of up to $10,000.

An indictment is not a finding of guilt. A person charged by indictment is presumed innocent until found guilty beyond a reasonable doubt by a jury or a judge. Because this case is pending trial, we can make no further comment on it.

Copies of indictments may be requested from the Bexar County District Clerk. Information on court settings can be found by searching the case online or directly from the court.
