Bexar County Jury Services warns against long-running jury duty scam
It has come to the attention of Bexar County Jury Services that scam artists are once again calling Bexar County residents claiming they have missed jury duty and therefore have an outstanding warrant for their arrest.
The choice as to who ends up receiving these calls appears to be random. Some of the call recipients have in fact been summoned for jury duty, while others have not. The callers attempt to intimidate the person by saying if they do not pay a certain fine law enforcement will come with an arrest warrant and pick them up. The callers then go on and tell the victims there is a way to avoid arrest. They instruct the victims to go to a Wal-Mart or another store and purchase a Green Dot card or money orders for the alleged fine.
WARNING: While the callers may sound very convincing and may mention the names of judges or other officials, these calls are bogus! This fraudulent scam has been around for several years. While someone who failed to appear for jury duty may face penalties, there will never be a telephonic request to pay a fine at a commercial store or threats of arrest.
If you have any questions or if someone has contacted about missed jury duty, please call the Central Jury Office at (210) 335-2667.
