A Bexar County jury found Ricky Cantu guilty of murder. Cantu,
58, was accused of driving while intoxicated on February 24, 2018, when he struck
and killed a motorcyclist, Rudy Borrego. Cantu
was charged with murder instead of intoxication manslaughter because he
had three previous convictions for driving while intoxicated.
After
the verdict was read in the 175th District Court, Cantu was taken immediately into custody without bond while he awaits sentencing. Judge Catherine Torres-Stahl will sentence Cantu at a later date. He faces up to 99 years or life in prison.
The
case was prosecuted on behalf of the Criminal District Attorney's Office by Assistant District Attorneys Clinton Malloy and Miranda
Carrillo.
“We
are thankful that the jury, after reviewing the evidence, rendered a just and
fair verdict. We hope this result brings a sense of justice to Rudy
Borrego’s family and friends. This jury’s verdict sends
a strong message that our community will not tolerate intoxicated drivers
putting our citizens’ lives in danger when they get behind the wheel,” Malloy
and Carrillo said.
