In Our Community
In visiting neighborhoods to learn about your needs and priorities and working with partners at the local, state, and federal levels of government Commissioner Rodriguez has come across numerous neighbors, businesses, and partners that deserve their own respective spotlights. That being said here are a few highlights about the outstanding work that has been happening within our community.
Recognizing Mario "El Azteca" Barrios, World Boxing Association’s Super Lightweight Champion
Mario "El Azteca" Barrios, a 24-year-old undefeated Mexican-American professional boxer and now holds the World Boxing Association’s Super Lightweight title. He currently maintains a record of 25-0, with 16 knockouts, and is ranked the 10th best active super lightweight boxer in the world.
Mr. Barrios has proven that through hard work and dedication, extraordinary goals can be achieved. He is an inspiration and a mentor to other young athletes. He has been successful at a world class level and gives credit to the great city of San Antonio and its citizens for their continued support in helping to prepare him for all that he has accomplished.
Commissioner Justin Rodriguez Secures $150,000 to support Westside Small Businesses
Commissioner Justin Rodriguez secured $150,000 to launch a LiftFund Dream Makers Fund pilot program to support Westside businesses. These funds will provide affordable and safe small business loans to entrepreneurs who cannot qualify for capital through traditional sources, such as a bank. Principal payments from loans underwritten by this program will be reinvested back into the fund, creating a self-regenerating, long-term funding source available to entrepreneurs for years to come! Commissioners Court Authorizes Demolition and Sale of Former Jail Land to UTSA
Commissioners Court has authorized an agreement with the University of San Antonio (UTSA) to demolish the formerly private-owned Central Texas Detention Facility, and transform the property into an educational hub for business, cybersecurity, and technology education. This $5.7M land deal will aid in revitalizing the West Side of Downtown. The deal is expected to be closed by January of 2021.
The land sale is part of a major $70M investment that UTSA is making to the Downtown campus, including an expansion of the School of Business, the creation of the School of Data Science, and a new National Security Collaboration Center. UTSA expects these expansions to help double the university’s enrollment over the next 8 years, to 15,000 students. For more information on this project, click here.
