Sheriff's Deputies are granted authority by the state to enforce state law at the local county level. The primary purpose of the Law Enforcement Bureau is to uphold the laws of the jurisdiction, provide patrol, and investigate local crimes such as narcotics, assault, theft and homicides in addition to providing traffic enforcement, tactical support such as SWAT and K9. Judicial Services is responsible for serving arrest warrants, issuing court summons and other civil process within Bexar County and respond to persons in mental health crisis and transporting those in crisis to a local medical facility for treatment.

The Patrol Services Division is an operational component of the Sheriff’s Office, consisting of full-time sworn officers and volunteer reserve officers. This division is charged with the responsibility of protecting and serving the citizens of unincorporated Bexar County. Strategic Operations Division

The Strategic Operations Division is a multidisciplinary component of the Sheriff’s Office, consisting of full-time sworn officers in several sections supporting the Law Enforcement Bureau. The mission of this division is to support all law enforcement operations by developing special tactics and deploying specially trained personnel in unusual law enforcement situations and events. There are has two primary sections, Tactical Support Branch consisting of specialized units such as S.W.A.T., Traffic Enforcement Unit, Crisis Negotiations, Street Crime, and K9 Unit; and the Judicial Services Branch consisting of the Fugitive Apprehension Unit, Mental Health Unit, Civil Process, and Extraditions.

Criminal Investigations Division

The primary function of the Criminal Investigations Division is to conduct follow-up investigations of reported crimes. These investigations consist of interviewing suspects, victims, and witnesses; analyzing information for validity, reliability, and accuracy; and compiling a comprehensive and factual case file to be presented in court. The Criminal Investigations Division has four primary Investigative Sections, General Crimes, Crimes against Persons, Property Crimes, and Narcotics.
