MEET THE NEW SMWBE TEAM MEMBER:

This newsletter is provided by the Bexar County SMWBE Program to inform the public on the status of the community venues projects that were approved by the voters in May 2008.

 

Tony Canez is the SMWBE Analyst for the Community Venues projects. 

 

The organizations will develop, construct, and/or refurbish their facilities. As each project enters into the different stages of development, the project teams have expressed needs to fill opportunities such as, but not limited to the areas of:

 

- Fencing        - Sod                 - Irrigation            - Turf     

- Electrical     - Bleachers     - Landscaping       - Lighting      - Environmental Testing

 

Tony seeks to identify and announce the various opportunities that arise from these projects and works with the project developers to involve SMWBE firms whenever possible.  He most recently worked as a project manager for a small woman-owned general contracting firm. 

 


 

SOUTHEAST SKYLINE MAKES BIG PROGRESS

Phase I of the Skyline PONY Fields project, which includes the new concession, bathrooms, and meeting room facility, as well as 2 parking lots, has been completed.  Construction on Phase II, to develop all of the fields, will begin in October and is expected to be ready for next season. 

 This new complex will include:

  • -1 Shetland Field                                      -1 Mustang Boys Field
  • -1 Bronco Boys Field                               -1 Colt Boys Field
  • -1 Practice Field                                       -1 Pony Boys Field
  • -1 Softball Field                                        -1 new playground

The grand opening is expected in April 2010.

The project team estimates that SE Skyline has utilized 49% small & minority-owned businesses and 91% local firms during Phase I construction.

 MCALLISTER PARK LITTLE LEAGUE IN THE SPOTLIGHT

 

The McAllister Park All Star Team made history this season by being the first team from San Antonio to advance to the Little League World Series and they made all of Bexar County very proud by their performance.

 

Construction to begin at McAllister Park Little League ball-fields

 

The design is complete to redevelop four major/senior big league fields and add six additional ones, and construction is set to begin this Fall.  The new facility amenities include paved parking, concessions and restrooms.  The anticipated completion is April 2010. 

McAllisterlogoWhile the project is merely finishing up the design phase, the McAllister project team indicates that 54% of what has been spent so far was paid to certified small business enterprises and 100% was spent with local firms.

CLASSICS ELITE SOCCER PARK SET TO BE BUILT

The design of five proposed, tournament quality soccer fields at McAllister Park has been completed and construction is underway.CESA Clip Art

The development will include:

- Parking            - Irrigation

- Restrooms       - Lighting

NEWS NOTES ON THE BEXAR COUNTY PERFORMING ARTS CENTER FOUNDATION

BCPAC DesignJanuary 2009 - The Bexar County Performing Arts Center Foundation announced the selection of Rodney J. Smith, CFE as the new General Director for the Bexar County Performing Arts Center Foundation. Smith comes to San Antonio with experience in theater design, construction and operation of performing arts spaces.  J. Bruce Bugg, President and Chairman of the Foundation, stated that Smith has successfully managed a multi-facility program, and has been at the forefront of expanding arts education.

 

April 2009 - The Bexar County Performing Arts Center Foundation selected a certified women-owned business (WBE),Perf Arts Art The Projects Group, to manage the renovation of the Municipal Auditorium into the Performing & Educational Arts Center.  The firm will provide comprehensive program and project management services from April 1st through the completion of the project.

 

May 2009 - The partnership of LMN Architects and Marmon Mok Architects of San Antonio was selected to design the new performing arts center.  The design team is also comprised of nine other firms, including five from San Antonio.  Alpha Consulting Engineers will serve on the structural engineering team and is certified as a small minority owned business (SMBE). Fisher Heck, a small business enterprise (SBE), will provide their expertise in local historic renovation.

Status of SOAR South texas Area

Regional (STAR) Soccer Complex

Construction of the SOAR STAR Complex is in progress and the regional sports park will highlight such features as:

     -  14 high quality soccer fields

     -  Morgan's Wonderland, the world's first Ultra-Accessible Family Fun Park, dedicated to outdoor recreation for people with special needs.

The park is scheduled to begin operations in Spring of 2010.

 

The Gordon Hartman Family Foundation estimates that SOAR has utilized 85% local businesses and 37% small, minority & woman-SOAR Fieldsowned firms during the construction of the park.

Of the 106 acre site that was SOAR Playgrthe former Longhorn Quarry, approximately 77 acres will be used by the STAR Soccer Complex.

This new soccer complex will represent the largest of its type in the San Antonio region, increasing our number of fields by almost 25%.  The 14 fields will be full size and fully lit which will SOAR DESIGNallow San Antonio to be able to accommodate large local, statewide and national tournaments.

The typical size of the fields will be 225' by 330' SOAR Logoallowing for competitive adult play as well as the capability to convert each field into two half-size fields thereby doubling the potential number of fields (27) for use by all ages.For more information on the SOAR Regional Soccer Complex, contact Dub Farris (210) 495-5888.
