KAREN POZZA has served as Judge of the 407th District Court since January of 2001. Prior to her service on the bench, she was in the private practice of law focusing on civil litigation.
Judge Pozza earned a B.B.A. in finance and economics from Baylor University in 1986 and graduated from St. Mary’s University School of Law in 1991. In law school, Judge Pozza served as Associate Editor of the St. Mary’s Law Journal and was invited to membership in Phi Delta Phi legal honor society.
Judge Pozza is a past President of the San Antonio Bar Association and of the Community Justice Foundation. She serves on the Bexar County Juvenile Board and the board of Texas RioGrande Legal Aid. She has also served as chair of the board of the Bexar County Dispute Resolution Center and as a board member of the Child Guidance Center and the San Antonio Children’s Museum.
In 2002, Judge Pozza co-founded the Community Justice Program which increases access to justice by providing free legal service for people who otherwise could not afford an attorney. As of 2009, over 3,000 cases have been handled through the program.
In 1998, 2003, and 2005 Judge Pozza was recognized by the San Antonio Bar Association with the President’s Award for her work on bar-related education, pro bono leadership and for spearheading the legal relief effort for local evacuees of hurricane Katrina. In 2003, she was selected by the San Antonio Business Journal to receive the Women’s Public Service Leadership Award. In 2004 she was honored by Texas RioGrande Legal Aid with the Partners in Justice Award for outstanding support for equal justice. She is also the recipient of the 2007 Pioneer Peacemaker Award from the San Antonio Bar Foundation.
