Defendant Pleads Guilty To The Intoxication Manslaughter of Local Neurosurgeon
San Antonio, Texas: August 2, 2010
This afternoon Clayton Stowe, 31, entered a plea of guilty to the offense of Intoxication Manslaughter arising from the death of prominent local neurosurgeon, Dr. Roman Hlatky. The Defendant entered his plea without a plea agreement with the State.
On September 20, 2006, at about 12:30 a.m., Roman Hlatky, M.D., a neurosurgeon and an Assistant Professor at the University of Texas Health Science Center in the Department of Neurosurgery, was on his way home from University Hospital after performing surgery. Dr. Hlatky’s vehicle was struck from behind by a vehicle driven by the Defendant. The collision occurred on I.H. 10 West near the DeZavala exit. Dr. Hlatky died at the scene. The Defendant was arrested and charged with Intoxication Manslaughter and a mandatory blood draw was performed.
The Defendant’s punishment is to be assessed by visiting Senior District Judge Pat Priest. A hearing is set for 1:30 p.m. on September 10th. Intoxication Manslaughter is a second degree felony, with a punishment range from two to twenty years in prison and a fine of up $10,000. The State opposes the Defendant’s application for probation.
