SAN ANTONIO MAN SENTENCED TO FIVE YEARS PRISON FOR ONLINE SOLICITATION OF A MINOR

San Antonio, Texas: June 28, 2010

Today, Susan D. Reed, announced that George Martinez, a 36 year old San Antonio resident, was convicted for Online Solicitation of a Minor and sentenced to five years confinement in prison by 399th District Court Judge Juanita Vasquez-Gardner. Martinez had no prior criminal record.

This case arose as a result of an investigation initiated by the San Antonio Police Department’s Vice Unit in May 2008. As part of the investigation, an undercover detective posed as a fifteen year old female on a Yahoo chat group and was contacted by the defendant. In his chats with the undercover detective, Martinez began communicating in a sexually explicit manner clearly seeking to engage in sexual conduct with the “female.” The defendant was arrested on June 5, 2008 when he appeared at a prearranged meeting location under the mistaken belief he was meeting with the fifteen year old female but instead was met by police. At the time of his arrest, Martinez told police he had come to the location to warn the young girl about the dangers of meeting with strangers. This, of course, contradicted his earlier sexually explicit plans for the rendezvous.

Online Solicitation of a Minor is a third degree felony and carries a range of punishment of 2 to 10 years confinement and a fine up to $10,000.
