FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

DISTRICT ATTORNEY DEVELOPING COMMUNITY GARDEN

San Antonio, Texas: July 21, 2009:

Appearing before the Bexar County Commissioners’ Court, District Attorney Susan Reed briefed Commissioners on her efforts to develop a community garden on the county’s Juvenile Courts and Probation property located on the northeast corner of Mission Road and Mitchell Street. The garden would be known as the Roosevelt Park Community Garden.

Reed explained the goal is to create an integrated vehicle where juvenile probationers assigned community service hours would work on a community project beneficial to the entire neighborhood.

To support the effort, Reed along with the Juvenile Probation department has applied for a starter grant from Green Spaces Alliance of South Texas. Additionally, Reed has committed to a grant from the District Attorney’s Seized Assets fund. Several local businesses and Master Gardners have pledged their help.

“Teaching juvenile offenders the value, reward, and satisfaction derived from hard work coupled with establishing respect for others and their property is the goal of the juvenile system when assigning community service hours. A community garden will integrate all of these goals with a very worthwhile neighborhood project. It is a win for everyone” said Reed during the presentation.
