SUSAN D. REED
CRIMINAL DISTRICT ATTORNEY
BEXAR COUNTY, TEXAS
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
AREA LAWMAKERS LINE UP
IN SUPPORT OF PROPOSED PROTECTIVE ORDER BILL
San Antonio, Texas: February 13, 2009:
District Attorney Susan Reed is pleased to announce that her proposed changes to the Protective Order law have gained support from members of the Bexar County legislative delegation. Senator Carlos Uresti has offered to carry the bill in the Senate while both Representatives Trey Martinez-Fischer and Joaquin Castro have agreed to support the bill in the House of Representatives. Additionally, the District Attorney’s legislative liaison in Austin has received positive responses from all of the other Bexar County delegation’s offices.
District Attorney Reed’s proposed changes to the law come as a result of the murder of Kristy Appleby. Under current law, Appleby was not eligible to obtain a Protective Order. The changes are designed to protect a third party from violence arising from the third party’s dating relationship with the former spouse or boyfriend / girlfriend of an individual bent on violence.
