IN ONE DAY TWO BEXAR COUNTY CASES SEND A MESSAGE TO
THOSE WHO COMMIT CRIMES AGAINST THE ELDERLY

San Antonio , Texas ; August 4, 2006: Today, Bexar County District Attorney Susan D. Reed announced that yesterday, a jury sentenced Emillio Montgomery to 50 years after convicting him of Aggravated Robbery and Burglary of a Habitation of a 75 year old victim. Later the same day, in the 175 th District Court, Lenard DeVaughn, age 43, was sentenced to 40 years in prison for Burglary of a Habitation of a 67 year old victim.

On March 5, 2004, Gertraud Perbandt-Oliver, then 67, was awakened from a nap around 2:00p.m. by her front doorbell ringing. She looked out the window and saw a man, who she later identified as the defendant, Lenard DeVaughn, age 43, walking away from her home. About 30 minutes later, the victim was startled by the sound of a “crash” coming from her master bedroom. She walked in to find the back window broken in and the defendant with his arm through the hole, trying to gain entry. She screamed and ran out her front door calling for help. A woman driving by observed the commotion, followed the defendant to his vehicle and obtained his license plate number. Upon returning to the scene, both ladies gave a description of the suspect to police. From the license plate number, SAPD Detectives learned the vehicle was registered to the defendant. Both women subsequently identified the Defendant from a photo line-up.

“These verdicts affirm my initiative on crimes against the elderly and send a clear message to criminals that Bexar County will not tolerate senior victim crimes, “ says Bexar County District Attorney, Susan D. Reed.
