DISTRICT ATTORNEY TO BRIEF EAST SIDE LEADERS ON SAFETY ZONE

District Attorney Susan D. Reed will be briefing East Side community leaders on the “East Side Safety Zone” today at 2:30 o’clock in the District Attorney’s conference room. A press conference will follow. On February 15, 2005 the District Attorney obtained a temporary restraining order prohibiting fourteen named defendants who are members or associates of the “Stixx Bloods Gangsters” from engaging in certain criminal or other activities related to or in furtherance of criminal activity in an area on the east side of San Antonio.  The area is bordered on the north by E. Commerce Street, on the west by Spriggsdale and Amanda streets, on the south by K. and F. Street and on the east by Brooksdale St. and Dafoste Ave.  The criminal activity consists primarily of repeated possession and delivery of controlled substances, often in areas near schools.  The defendants habitually use the “East Side Safety Zone” as a place to store, hide, and posses and sell illegal drugs.

The District Attorney will be seeking to make the temporary restraining order permanent, which will prohibit the defendants from committing certain acts within the safety zone, including associating with each other or other known members of “Stixx Bloods Gangsters,” and remaining together in any public place to conceal or engage in illegal conduct.  A hearing on the temporary injunction will be held on March 1, 2005.

The briefing will bring community leaders up-to-date on the safety zone and the positive impact it has on their neighborhood and it will provide an opportunity for the community members to express their concerns on these and other neighborhood crime to the District Attorney. “This injunction is a tool to help communities take their neighborhoods away from drug dealers and other criminals.  The leaders of the community want their streets made safer, they are doing all they can to make that happen and I intend to help them in any way I can.  This is one way that has proven to be effective in other areas and will be effective in this one,” said District Attorney Reed.

The District Attorney and the community leaders immediately following the briefing will hold a press conference.
