The Family Drug Treatment Court of Judge John J. Specia, 225th District Court, is an innovative approach to family preservation in which a parent is provided with various treatment opportunities for drug and alcohol abuse. Upon successful completion of the treatment opportunities, parents and their children are preserved as a family.
The Division of Children and Family Services has provided the Family Drug Treatment Court with a $3,700 grant for funding of inpatient drug treatment services. The Division has also linked the Family Drug Treatment Court to various stakeholders within the alcohol and drug abuse treatment community as well as program evaluators within academia.
Importantly, the Division of Children and Family Services coordinated a meeting between the leadership of this court and the leadership of the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC). This meeting was successful in that the highest levels of state leadership were given the opportunity to see the cutting-edge work of the court and county. Moreover, the Family Drug Treatment Court received a commitment to funding through state dollars as well as an invitation to technical assistance regarding the application of funding from federal sources. The Division of Children and Family Services continues to serve as a team member of the Family Drug Treatment Court on issues related to sustainable funding and programmatic enhancements. |
