Your County Tax Dollars Working for You!

Commissioners Court- General Government

  • Sets tax rate and adopts the county budget for County
  • Appoints certain county officials and hires four directors who hire respective personnel
  • Fills elective and appointive vacancies   
  • Establishes voting precincts, appoint precinct judges and calls county bond elections,
  • Lets contracts and authorizes payment of all county bills
  • Builds and maintains county roads and bridges, builds, maintains and improves county facilities including jails, approves plats for residential development in unincorporated areas
  • Appoints University Health System (UHS) Board of Managers, approves UHS budget and tax rate.
  • Finances most of the following areas of Bexar County Government.

Justice

Courts

  • Courts-at Law (12 Total: 2 Civil, 10 Criminal)
  • District Courts (County provides staff and court space for 22 State Courts)
  • Fourth Court of Appeals (County provides staff and court space for seven Justices that hear appeals for a 32-county South and Central Texas District)
  • Several other courts such as the Childrenīs Court and courts over which a Master presides.  

Law Enforcement

Fire Marshall

  • Fire Investigation/ Inspection Section

District Attorney's Office Investigates, prosecutes, appeals all criminal and most civil cases where necessary, advises County on civil matters

Record Keeping

County Clerk- Official record keeper for the County, preserves records, statutory clerk for County Courts at Law, records deeds, deeds of trust, abstracts of judgments, Uniform Commercial Codes documents, prenuptial agreements, military discharges, assumed names, hospital liens, mechanic liens, federal tax Liens, marriage licenses, maintains historical records- Spanish Archives, maintains Vital Statistics- marriage certificates, birth & death certificates prior to 1967, school records, cattle brands and warehouse bonds, Office of the County Treasury- records and deposits daily monetary receipts collected by the various Bexar County offices.

District Clerk- Records all civil and criminal filings of the District Courts, operates as the register of Courts, custodian of court records

Tax Collection- tax assessment and collection, motor vehicle titling and registration, is an agent of the Texas State Comptroller to collect beer and liquor license fees

Election Department
Conducts federal, state and county elections; contracts conduct of elections with and for various taxing entities, conducts voter registration

Housing and Human Services-

  • Community Development Block Grants-Public facilities senior/child care centers, related infrastructure- water/sewer, flood/drainage, sidewalks/ street repair, ADA/curbs, Public Service- child/senior care crime prevention
  • Direct Client Services- pauper burial services, utility assistance, Emergency Services (food water & clothing)
  • Dispute Resolution Center- free mediation
    Forensic Science Center- Medical Examiner, Criminal Investigation Laboratory
  • Home Program- housing rehabilitation, mortgage lending, Nonprofit- Single Family Home Production, home buying education/counseling
  • Pretrial Services- community safety through structured supervision
  • TX Cooperative Extension- Agriculture & Natural Resources Programs, Horticulture and Environmental Programs, 4H Youth Development, family and consumer sciences programs, food and nutrition programs
  • Veteran Services- assist veterans, families and survivors
     

Infrastructure Services- flood control projects, capital improvements projects, public works, parks, road construction and  maintenance in unincorporated subdivisions and other county designated roads, environmental services

University Health System- provides health care including one of the three Level One Trauma Care Centers in the region; finances San Antonio AirLife, one of the nation's premier helicopter-medical services; provides medical informational support to Bexar County Health Care Coalition.
