String of Pearls ___________________________________
On October 27, 2001, volunteers from Bexar County, St. Mary's University and around the neighborhood will come out to the 1st String of Pearls Project (Home Rehabilitation Project) in Bexar County Precinct 4.
The String of Pearls Program is a rehabilitation project that works on houses in the inner city. Charles Hepler of the San Antonio Education Partnership came to the Bexar County Housing and Finance Corporation and asked if we could partner with their program on the Eastside of San Antonio. Bexar County Housing Finance Corporation committed $50,000 on behalf of Bexar County to combine with another $50,000 from Freddie Mac.
Eight homes on the Eastside have been chosen for this rehabilitation project. To be chosen, homeowners had to meet certain criteria such as be elderly or disabled and financially unable to perform the work themselves. These homes will get such things as a new roof, paint jobs, or small repairs.
Those who participated in planning or donating their experience to the program are as follows:
McCoys Lumber Factory Builders Store Monarch/PPG Paint Store Ella SA Contracting Advance Engineering Services Bison Lumber Phantom Screens Casa Linda McKenzie Roofing David Weekly Homes Coca Cola Enterprises St. Philips College Constable Matthew Marshall Gardendale Vol. Fire Dept.
