NEWS RELEASE
COMMISSIONER ADKISSON
Secures $50,000
to
REHAB EASTSIDE HOMES
______________________________________________

San Antonio, October 26, 2001 Commissioner Tommy Adkisson Precinct Four, secured $ 50, 000 dollars through the Bexar County Housing and Finance Corp, for the String of Pearls Housing Rehab Program that will be taking place on Eastside San Antonio, Precinct Four which Commissioner Adkisson represents.

Back in May of 2001, Commissioner Adkisson was approached by the San Antonio Education Foundation to partner in with them and Freddie Mac who also put in $50,000 dollars to this program to rehab houses in the Commissioner's Precinct.

The purpose of the program is to help Senior Citizens, Disabled, and low-income residents who can not afford to paint or make repairs to their home because of fixed incomes.

With the help of corporate sponsors such as, Coca-Cola San Antonio, HEB Store #21 and volunteers, such Constable Matthew Marshall Precinct Four, and Bexar County employees, this program has taken shape. On Saturday, October 27,2001 these volunteers will descend on Maryland, Montana and Wyoming Streets and work on 8 homes.

These 8 homes, all of which qualified to participate in the String of Pearls Housing Rehab Program, will be receiving new roofs, minor repairs and painting on the outside of the homes. CPS and SAWS came in during the week and performed weatherization, and plumbing repairs to all of the participating homes.

"With the soon to be opening of the Spring View Home Project that borders these streets, what we do will only add to the beautification of this historical neighborhood. It gives an uplift to a neighborhood that for whatever reason has long been forgotten". said Commissioner Adkisson. "This gives the residents a boost  in the way they will feel about their neighborhood."

Many of the participants, who are retired from the work force live on fixed incomes, have been living in this neighborhood for most of their lives.  The average homeowner has been living in their home for about 40 years.  As they get older, some find it hard to get up and down their front steps. With the help of companies who are donating their time like David Weekley homes, Who is participating in the program and who is building a ramp to one of the front doors that a homeowner is in need of. " Our goal with the String of Pearls was to help in the best possible way to enhance the lives of those in our community. Independence and mobility are of such great importance to people like Mrs. Rebecca McGarity and we are thrilled that we could be of assistance to her and others in the project." Rhonda Fox, David Weekley Homes Outreach Team Chairperson
