BACKGROUND: Commissioner Tommy Adkisson wants to know if Albertson's must close three stores in San Antonio, "Why are they all on the Southside.?" Their slogan is "We are your store", but yet no one in our community was consulted about closing all of our stores in South San Antonio. Adkisson said, "Now, we are faced with three large vacant buildings and more importantly, many lost jobs from our community."
NEWS RELEASE COMMISSIONER ADKISSON to Remarks on the Closing of 3 Albertson's Stores ____________________________________________________
San Antonio, November 8, 2001 – At 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, November 8th, Commissioner Adkisson, along with other community leaders, gathered in front of Albertson's Store No. 4083 to protest the closing of three out of the twenty-two stores in San Antonio. Coincidentally, all three stores are located in Southside San Antonio. "It is not new to Southsiders to experience geographical bias. Some of us remember the decision to locate the County's indigent hospital in Oak Hills and the University of Texas' decision to locate UTSA closer to downtown Boerne than to downtown San Antonio. But after all these years anti-Southside prejudice is still very difficult to accept," said County Commissioner, Tommy Adkisson.
Commissioner Adkisson expressed his concern about the loss of the stores and most importantly, the loss of jobs or the inconvenience of relocation for the present 240 Albertson's employees and to the additional IBC employees. "This is a disservice to the employees, Southside residents, and to the community."
As a result, Commissioner Adkisson and Senator Frank Madla have organized a meeting with Miguel Gutierrez, Public Affairs Representative for Albertson's Grocery Stores, along with other community leaders. They will be discussing the company's reasoning behind their actions and the near future of Albertson's in Bexar County.
NEWS RELEASE COMMISSIONER ADKISSON and SENATOR MADLA to meet with Albertson's Representative
___________________________________________________________
San Antonio, November 13, 2001 – Last week, Albertson's' officials announced they would be closing three of their twenty-two stores in San Antonio. The fact that all three stores were located on the Southside of San Antonio and that the closure was so poorly handled angered local officials. Bexar County Commissioner Precinct 4, Tommy Adkisson stressed the inconvenience to the community and the loss of jobs to the employees, as well as, "the likelihood that as federal taxpayers we will all finance this flippant decision of Albertson's'."
As a result of last week's news conference, Commissioner Adkisson, Senator Madla, and other community leaders will meet this afternoon, at Senator Madla's Office at 3:30 PM, with Miguel Gutierrez, Public Affairs Representative for Albertson's' Grocery Stores. They will discuss care and maintenance, as well as future marketing of these properties.
