SAISD Tax Rollback
The Highland Hills Neighborhood Association at its October 1, regular meeting considered the San Antonio Independent School District's tax rollback proposal and voted unanimously to endorse the measure. Association President Tommy Adkisson stated that "SAISD has delivered greatly for this County on a range of fronts as recently as the earning of the coveted 2007 Trinity Prize for Excellence in Teaching, awarded to Ricky Flores, Band Director at Irving Middle School, who emerged number one from a field of 20 finalists among area teachers."
Despite this and many other significant strengths, SAISD has of late, lost some of its student population. This decreases revenue paid to the District by the State for its average daily attendance. So what the Legislature has unfortunately done is decrease SAISD's revenue by lowering of the tax rate, but offering State replacement money to the District if and only if it can secure a successful vote to retain part of the legislatively decreased tax rate.
Adkisson added, "Highland Hills Neighborhood Association sees the injustice to SAISD in this scenario." To take money from a District when it is fighting for its future only hurts the vitality of our neighborhoods!"
