Any candidate seriously seeking my support to be the interim Sheriff of Bexar County must agree to consider terminating the Jail Commissary contract with Premier Management and returning it to the Bexar County Jail Ministries. At a time when an estimated 81% of those in our jail are repeat offenders, something is seriously wrong with the manner in which we deal with the offender population. Therefore, anything we do to plow back proceeds from the commissary into re-entry efforts to channel former inmates into becoming productive members of society is priority one for me.
If any candidate for Interim Sheriff wants to earn my consideration for the interim appointment, he or she can do so by committing to immediately canceling Premier's contract and beginning the healing process made necessary by the manner in which Premier has chosen to do business in Bexar County.
