Bexar County Helps Fund Martinez Dam Improvements

The Martinez Dam # 4 located in the Live Oak City Park, will under go rehabilitation to ensure the dam meets current dam and safety standards. Bexar County is providing a cash match of $525,000. This along with $975,000 dollars provided by the Natural Resources Conservation a service of the United States Department of Agriculture will help to extend the life of the dam at least 100 years. Modifications to the dam include raising the height of the dam and improve the spillway. Project Manager for this project will be the San Antonio River Authority which will be working with Alamo Soil & Water Conservation District. Bexar County has committed $1.5 Million dollars to control flooding in Northeast Bexar County. Last year Bexar County provided $525,000 towards Martinez Dam # 5. "As Bexar County continues to grow in population and impervious cover (rooftops, concrete, pavement, etc) in Northeast Bexar County we are seeing an increase in flooding in that region of the county." said Tommy Adkisson, Bexar County Commissioner for Precinct Four. "We must continue to modify and improve what is currently in place to control our flood waters. By doing so we are protecting our northeast community and everything south" adds Commissioner Adkisson.

The rehabilitation project for Martinez Dam #5 will begin this July 2004 construction on Martinez Dam #4 will begin after all preliminary work is completed. When both these projects are completed, the level of the lakes will be higher and have sustainable fishery. Ground breaking for the rehabilitation project is June 29, 2004 at 10:00 A.M and will be held at Martinez Dam #5. Special invited guest will be Congressman Ciro Rodriguez and other local County and City elected officials. The public is invited to attend the ground breaking ceremonies.
