True Greatness in Our Midst!

Although there is a great deal of exciting and challenging business before the County, I am inspired to inform you about a thrilling feature of our annual Community calendar. On April 10 St. Philips College presents its "11th Annual San Antonio Symphony Residency Final concert". What a performance!
St. Philips college through its funding and that of from the Alamo Community College District of around $40,000 have initiate a collaborative effort with the San Antonio Symphony to provide an intense, tuition-free music education opportunity for students in the San Antonio Independent School District. This project is modeled after the Julliard School of Music program and is called Music Advancement Program.
Forty-seven students from 6th, 7th and 8th grades are selected for participation based upon auditions and interviews with the San Antonio symphony, local musicians and St. Philips College Music Faculty. Auditioning students play a prepared piece and a sight-reading selection as well as complete a diagnostic skills test to demonstrate proficiency. They meet weekly on Saturday morning from the fall through mid-May. Their
Instruction includes music theory/ fundamentals, workshops, private lesson and/or ensembles.
St. Philips College faculty and professional musicians help prepare the students for the recital, which culminates the 1998-99 Program May 22 at 2 P.M. in the SPC Watson Fine Arts Theater.
As County Commissioner of Precinct Four I represent all or portions of the SAISD, East Central, Judson, Schertz-Cibolo, Northeast ISD, Randolph ISD and Fort Sam Houston ISD. As you will note, some are new, some urban, some rural, some part rural and urban. All are important. These districts in Precinct Four in addition to the many private schools and home schooling parents. I was delighted to see such a worthy program in place to address the needs and aspirations of our students, so much so that I wanted to shine some light on it in this column. |
