The following questions are some that we have been specifically asked from females seeking employment.  Other frequently asked questions can be found on our main FAQ page.

Q - Is there a physical agility test for women?
A - Yes, all Detention Officer applicants are required to test and are required to meet the standards regardless of gender or age.  You can find these requirements here.

Q - What is the work schedule like?  I have family obligations.
A - As might be expected, the Bexar County Adult Detention Center is a 24 hour operation comprised of 3 shifts. The shifts are 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., 3 p.m. to 11 p.m. and 11 p.m. to 7 a.m.  While in training at the Guerra Academy, you will attend classes Monday - Friday.

Q - Are there promotional opportunities for women?
A - Absolutely!  The Bexar County Sheriff's Office is an equal opportunity employer and does not discriminate against race, gender, age, creed, religion, sexual orientation etc.  Our Civil Service Commission has procedures for promotion and advancement opportunities.  Women have been promoted to all rank levels within the Sheriff's Office. When promotional opportunities are announced, it is the responsibility of the employee to prepare themselves for the exam and oral review board.

Q - Is there training available on how to handle inmates?
A - Yes.  Within your 12 week course at the Guerra Academy, you will be taught direct supervison management, unarmed self defense techniques, code of ethics, interpersonal communication skills, Sheriff's Policy and Procedure, CPR and firearms training. Your training is designed to give you the tools you need to successfully resolve conflicts and minimize risk to yourself, other staff members and inmates.

Q - Will I have to cut my hair?
A - No.  There is no requirement for female applicants/cadets to cut their hair.
