George L. Mangold

Deputy George L Mangold was shot on the morning of September 18, 1932. He died later that morning at a local hospital. Deputy Mangold, along with deputies Raymond Griffin, R.E. Burns and Laurence Millard went to the Handy Andy store, located on Culebra Rd., 2 miles from San Antonio to answer a call for burglars. Upon arrival Mangold and Burns went to the rear of the store, as they were walking, a man fired a shotgun at close range with buckshot, striking Mangold in the right chest. Other deputies opened fire and one man was captured at the scene and two others were arrested later. Egene Banspach, 31, Joe Demack, 34 and Ed McDonald, 26 were charged with Mangold's Murder. Mangold was 40 years old and had been with the sheriffs office for only nine months. Deputy Mangold was survived by his wife, Mrs. Frances Mangold, and their two daughters, Joyce 15, and Marilynn, 10. He was also survived by four brothers, Eugene, August, Joe and John Mangold, and one sister, Mrs. Arthur Holtzhouse, all of Castroville. Interment was at San Fernando Cemetery.
