Provide employment for vocational training of inmates

Reimburse the county for expenses and the cost of confinement
*
Provide distribution of articles and products produced
Products
and articles produced can be can be provided to:

Offices of the county and political subdivisions located in
whole or in part in the county
*
Nonprofit organizations that provide services to the general
public and enhance the general well-being of the community
Art.
43.10 - Manual Labor -
The Sheriff shall have control and management of the Jail
Industries Program and inmates may be put to labor upon public
works and occasional projects for a political subdivision located
in whole or in part in the county. This section also covers
liability: The Sheriff, county employee, or officer or
employee of a political subdivision other than a county is not
liable for damages arising from an act in connection with manual
labor performed by an inmate pursuant to this article if the act
or failure to act:

Was performed pursuant to court ordered confinement
*
Was not intentional, willfully or wantonly negligent, or
performed with conscious indifference or reckless disregard for
the safety of others.
Art.
497.096 - Liability Protection -
Liability protection is extended to include not being held liable
for damages arising from an act or failure to act in connection
with community service performed by an inmate imprisoned in a
facility operated by the department.
Inmates
selected for work outside of the security perimeter are carefully
screened and selected. Inmates must be:

Minimum custody
*
Have a sentence and time ending date
*
Misdemeanor or contempt of court charge
*
Supervised by an armed Deputy
*
Screened for prior discipline
*
Screened for prior charges
*
Screened for other security information
In
exchange for their participation the inmate receives a reduction
in their sentence of one day for each day they participate in the
program.
