Online Park Reservations a Hit in Bexar County, Texas

A Web-based parks reservation system has streamlined how residents pay for using park amenities in Bexar County, Texas.
When citizens access the application, they select which park they are interested in, and then click on the pavilion they wish to reserve. A 360-degree panoramic view appears, giving a preview of the area. A calendar with prior reserved dates, associated amenities and the cost of the reservation also is displayed.

Texas best and brightest government IT projects and professionals were honored Thursday, July 12, with the Center for Digital Governments (CDG) Best of Texas Awards.
The annual awards program spotlights the top government IT efforts over the past year in the state, including in-house developed applications, green IT and program management. This year, 25 awards were given out — two IT Leadership honors, 12 Project Excellence awards and 11 Outstanding Service and Support awards.

It's point, click and party time for the Bexar County parks system.
Officials are encouraged by the public's positive initial response to the new online reservation system for 10 popular Bexar County park facilities.
The system that launched Oct. 1 has an interactive website that gives the public a 360-degree view of pavilions and meeting halls, so folks can evaluate party venues before they reserve and pay for them online.

Bexar County has come a long way toward embracing technology to make county government more responsive and more transparent. Only two years ago, the county did not even rank in a Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts program that recognizes local governments for their efforts to achieve online transparency.
The knock against Bexar County then was that the county website lacked a searchable register of expenditures for the current fiscal year. That problem has been rectified. Though it's somewhat difficult to locate, the county auditor posts an up-to-date claims register that allows taxpayers to review how the county is spending their money.
Bexar County website wins innovation award

Bexar County has received a national technology innovation award for My Bexar Community Dashboard, a website that enables residents to easily seek local government information.
Launched in January, the dashboard ties into Geographic Information System and other databases. Users can find out where to vote, locate neighborhood resources and get basic information about ongoing public works projects and various political entities.
2011 Digital Counties Survey Winners Announced

State and local IT employees from across Texas gathered together Monday, June 13, to accept their trophies at the Center for Digital Government’s (CDG) Best of Texas Awards ceremony at Government Technology Conference Southwest in Austin, Texas.
The ceremony spotlighted the best of of government IT, including re-procurements, in-house developed applications, green IT, applications addressing internal needs, citizen-facing Web-applications, and several other focuses.
Bexar County, Texas, Launches Community Dashboard in Response to Rising Population

Bexar County, Texas, recently launched a new community dashboard as a way to provide consolidated, useful county information to its increasing population.
The county, located in south-central Texas about 190 miles west of Houston, currently has 1.7 million residents, making it one of the most populated in the country, according to the 2010 Census data. Since the county continues to grow, Bexar CIO Cathy Maras tasked the Bexar County Information Technology department’s GIS division to consolidate county information into an easy-to-use platform to keep citizens involved and proactive in their communities, said GIS manager Todd Alvis.
