Bexar County receives annual funding from the US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) through the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program. The CDBG program is focused on the development of viable urban communities by providing decent housing, a suitable living environment and expanded economic opportunities. CDBG activities must benefit persons of low to moderate income. CDBG national objectives for the use of funds are 1) benefit low and moderate income persons, 2) aid the prevention of slum and blight or 3) meet an urgent need. Applications for CDBG funds are made available in January. Applications must be submitted at a scheduled public hearing.


Eligible Activities

Acquisition, installation, construction and rehabilitation of public infrastructure such as water/sewer/electric lines or street drainage and sidewalks
Acquisition, construction or rehabilitation of public neighborhood facilities serving low to moderate income persons ( parks, community centers, day care or health facilities) or servicing persons with special needs (senior centers, homeless shelters, group homes and halfway homes)

Rehabilitation Activities
Public Service Activities such as job training and employment services; health care and substance abuse services; childcare; utility assistance; crime prevention; or fair housing activities
