Deputy Chief Joe Hamilton - Patrol & Special Operations

HamiltonJOE HAMILTON is the Deputy Chief of Patrol and Special Operations for the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office. In this role, he manages the law enforcement services in the unincorporated areas of Bexar County and in some municipalities. The Patrol division responds to citizens’ requests for service and enforcing criminal and traffic law. The Special Operations division includes the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Team, Crisis Negotiators, Emergency Operations Center (EOC) for Homeland Security, and the Canine (K-9) Unit. The Patrol division also oversees the Bexar County Sheriff’s Neighborhood Watch program, Cellular on Patrol program, Home Security Credit Inspection program, and the Explorer program for young people ages 14 – 21, to teach them the mission and objectives of law enforcement. Hamilton reports directly to Chief Deputy Longoria.

Prior to his appointment by Sheriff Pamerleau, Hamilton served as the Chief of Police for the City of Bulverde, Texas. He also served as the Assistant Federal Security Director for the Transportation Security Administration (TSA-Homeland Security) at the San Antonio International Airport.

Deputy Chief Hamilton brings a vast array of experience to the post with almost four decades in law enforcement. He worked for the State of Texas for 29 years, including serving the Texas Department of Public Safety, starting as a state trooper and rising to the level of District Commander. He has served at the top-levels of leadership in diverse environments including coordination of regional emergency management operations, rural and residential public safety and law enforcement, and managing personnel dispersed over a widespread area.

Hamilton is active in personal, civic, and law enforcement communities. He is the current chairman of the Alamo Area Council of Governments (AACOG) Regional Emergency Preparedness Advisory Committee, serves on the Executive Board of the Texas Police Association, and is the past chairman of the Alamo Area Police Chiefs Association.

He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from Texas A&M University, and is a graduate of the Northwestern University Center for Public Safety, School of Police and Command. He is a certified Master Peace Officer and Law Enforcement Instructor from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education (TCLEOSE). He is also a graduate of the Texas Department of Public Safety Academy.
