Obtain a DBA / Assumed Name


One of the first steps to starting your business is naming it. Once you have the perfect name, you need to obtain your "Doing Business As" record, also known as a DBA or Assumed Name. This is the first step to doing business in Bexar County. 

Getting your DBA is easy. The first thing to do is come up with a good name for your business. Then, confirm that it is available by performing a search in the County Clerk records. (Note: In order to search for an Assumed Name, you must register with the page by clicking the "Register" button) Click on the "Login - Search" button and log into your account, then click "Name" under the search menu. Here, enter the business name you want, select "Assumed Name" under the Instrument Type" and click "Go Search." If you don't see it, you can register it.

Once you know it is available, download the appropriate "Assumed Name Certificate" form for the type of business you are forming (Unincorporated, such as a sole proprietorship or Incorporated, such as an LLC) and take it to the County Clerk in the Paul Elizondo Tower, located at 101 W. Nueva, room 120 (Marriage Licenses & Assumed Names). The office is open from 8:00am to 5:00pm Monday-Friday.

An assumed business name is good for ten (10) years.
